Health risk survey available until Oct. 12

A Web-based Health Risk Assessment survey is available to faculty and staff until Oct. 12 online at www.healthynebraska.org. The company password is UNL07. Participants will need to choose a personal password.

All survey data will be collected anonymously. The data will be used to develop campus programming for faculty and staff.

Employees who complete the survey will receive a health risk report. Participants can access the report at any time after completing the survey. The survey takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

If the survey is inaccessible due to high volumes of participation, try again at a different time.

Areas in the survey include health care assessment and utilization, nutrition, tobacco use, family history, and preventable diseases.

For more information, contact Angie Frederick at afrederick2@unl.edu or 472-9480.

Exercise 101

• Make the decision to be active.

• Talk with your physician to be sure you don't have any underlying issues, especially if you haven't been active for 6 months or longer and/or if you're over 45 years old.

• Assess your current fitness and nutrition level. Areas to include are cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. Many fitness centers offer assessment services. Be sure staff is trained and/or certified.

• Schedule exercise into your daily calendar, just like a meeting.

• Find an exercise partner or personal trainer to help keep you motivated.

• Set attainable goals. Choose exercise or activities you enjoy. Write them down. Hire a personal trainer to help set goals and develop a program.

• Review your goals and track your progress regularly. Keep an exercise diary or notes in your calendar listing the activity and how you feel about it.

• Reassess goals and fitness level on a regular basis. Revise goals as you reach them. Reassess fitness level about every 8-12 weeks.

• Be sure to have fun.
