Nearly 700 joined Winning with Wellness program

 BY ANGIE FREDERICK, CAMPUS RECREATION

The Winning with Wellness program ended Oct. 27 with almost 700 campus registrants returning 366 scorecards.

The city-wide program - sponsored by Workwell, Lincoln's worksite wellness council - included UNL involvement from 21 campus departments and more than 20 academic units. Participation perks included a free month membership to the Campus Rec Centers and Lincoln YMCAs as well as free smoking cessation classes and a nutrition clinic.

Winning with Wellness, which encouraged physical activity, nutrition and smoking cessation was the catalyst for some UNL faculty, staff, and their families to make healthy changes in their daily habits. Marilyn Olmer of Scholarships and Financial Aid joined campus rec and enjoyed water aerobics classes. Her family went to the YMCA and she thinks they are going to join.

Other program feedback included participants starting a walking program as well as smoking cessation commitments.

"We got such a positive response from this program and we're looking forward to developing and implementing more programs for the UNL campus community," said Teresa Grosserode, graduate assistant for wellness programming at Campus Rec.

Those who finished the program were eligible for the city-wide prize drawing with the grand prize of $2,500 in travel vouchers for the adults and a trip to Worlds of Fun for kids.

Adult prize winners were: Suzi Tamerius - Manicure from Madonna ProActive (Soteria); Jeremy Reed - $25 Douglas Theatre Gift Certificate (donated by HWS Consulting Group); Patricia Rathe - $10 Gift Certificate to Scheels (donated by Molex); Sally Pfeiffer - $10 Gift Certificate to Starbucks (donated by TierOne Bank); and Rodney Covault - $10 Jet Splash Cash (donated by TierOne Bank).

Child prize winners were: Allyson Lanham - $50 Savings Bond (donated by Cornhusker Bank); Elise Huscher - Free Game/Free Minutes of bowling pass at Sun Valley Lanes; and Amanda Gutierrez - Adventure Maze and free Bowling Pass at Champions Fun Center.
