NU joins Web-based comparison program

The University of Nebraska is one of the first institutions of higher education to join the College Portrait, a Web-based program that compares information about colleges and universities nationwide.

"We want students, their families and the public to have reliable, up-to-date information about colleges and universities," said James B. Milliken, NU president. "The College Portrait allows students and their parents to compare institutions based on the factors they believe are most important."

Information on UNL will be added to the Web site.

Profiles of all participating institutions are available at www.voluntarysystem.org. Each profile includes information such as the cost of attendance, degree offerings, graduation rates, snapshot of student experiences/activities, and results of programs that measure progress in student learning.

The College Portrait is part of a new voluntary system of accountability project, a partnership between the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

"The benefits of the accountability system go beyond students and parents," Milliken said. "A high priority of the University of Nebraska is to be cost effective and accountable to the citizens of the state. This new tool will help us demonstrate that we are good stewards of the resources provided by taxpayers."
