Parking rolls out carpool permit program
BY TROY FEDDERSON, UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS
Campus carpoolers can reserve a space in a new parking program.
Parking and Transit Services is offering a pilot program that allows carpoolers to split the cost of a UNL parking permit. Limited to 25 carpools for the spring semester and summer sessions, the program will provide a reserved faculty/staff parking space in a designated lot or garage at the cost of a non-reserved space.
"With fuel prices on the rise, we've been getting a lot of feedback about ways we can help reduce costs for campus commuters," said Dan Carpenter, director of Parking Services. "This is one way to deal with the fuel price situation. And, it will also help the university be more green by reducing the number of vehicles coming to campus."
A carpool group must consist of a minimum of two full-time, benefits-eligible university employees.
Each member of a carpool must be registered with the group and are required to work compatible day-shift schedules on either campus.
Spouses and cohabitants that share the same address are excluded from the carpool program.
Carpenter said only one parking permit will be issued to each carpool, and only one of the registered vehicles may be parked in the designated space at any given time. Members of the carpool program are not eligible to purchase any other UNL parking permits.
The cost of a carpool permit for a reserved space in the pilot program is $307. An individual permit for a reserved space over the same time frame is $607.50.
"That's the incentive for enrolling in this program," Carpenter said. "You get a premium, reserved space for a non-reserved price. And, by splitting the driving, you also get to share the expense of gas, reduce pollutants and prolong vehicle life."
The permit price will be divided among each member of the carpool. Payment will be made through payroll deduction.
Carpenter said faculty and staff can turn in their current permit to join a carpool.
Parking and Transit Services must be notified of any change to any carpool status. If a carpool member drops out, the remaining members have 15 days to recruit a new member. If the carpool dissolves, members are required to return the carpool permit and purchase regular permits at a prorated cost.
