From the Archives - Pharmacy Hall

Chemical Laboratory, also called Pharmacy Hall, was built in 1885-1886, opening for occupancy in September 1886. The building was located on the modern site of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.

Originally used for chemistry, the building included three floors. The basement was initially used for elementary classes. The first floor was open to college study, while the top floor included a large lecture room and other rooms for "special investigation."

When Chemistry Hall (Avery Hall) was built, the Pharmacy College moved into the Chemical Laboratory building in 1917.

The building was made of red pressed brick, limestone foundation and trimmings and a slate roof. Original cost was $69,525.

The cornerstone for Chemical Laboratory was laid June 10, 1885, with the official building dedication on Jan. 14, 1887. When Chemical Laboratory was torn down (year unavailable), the cornerstone contained an invitation to the building dedication and several newspapers, including the June 10, 1885 Daily Nebraska State Journal.
