From the Archives - Burnett Hall

This image from the late 1940s shows the construction of Burnett Hall.

 

 

Originally planned as a companion building to Andrews Hall (which was completed in 1928), the construction of Burnett Hall was delayed for nearly 20 years due to the Great Depression and World War II.

The building is named after Chancellor Edgar A. Burnett, who retired in 1938. Burnett has been credited with keeping the university running through the Depression years.

To help the university cope with an influx of students following WWII, the Regents secured legislative funding for Burnett Hall in 1946.

The construction of Burnett Hall was hampered by steel and brick shortages following the war. Burnett Hall opened for classes in 1948.

Also pictured in the foreground along S Street (which no longer runs through City Campus) are four Army barracks. After the war, the barracks were converted to temporary classroom space. The
