UNL rates 6th in U.S. News 'Most Popular College' list

U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings promotion on Feb. 1 released a new list, analyzing top colleges' yields to outline the "Most Popular Colleges: National Universities." UNL ranked sixth for a 2006 yield rate of 66 percent.

Yield rate refers to the proportion of students admitted who actually enroll.

U.S. News on its college ranking site touts colleges to which "students really want to go," and lists UNL on its National Universities list at sixth.

"If a school has a high yield (a large proportion of those admitted enroll), it means that the school is most likely very popular with a top reputation and that the students are highly motivated to go there," the U.S. News Web site reported. "A very low yield means that the school could be a 'safety' or second choice for many of those who apply. Colleges use yield as a key factor in determining how many students they need to admit each year."

Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, was rated first with a yield rate of 79 percent. Texas A&M, rated tenth, was the only other Big 12 school to finish in the top 10 list.

In total, nine state universities finished among the top 20.

"Students tend to stay pretty close to home, and they're looking to better themselves financially," said David Hawkins, director of public policy and research for the National Association for College Admission Counseling. "The combination of affordable tuition and school success on the gridiron and basketball courts appears to be a hit."

Liberal Arts universities were listed separately.

Other Big 12 universities in the top 100 and their rank were Texas (15); Kansas (17); Missouri (28); Iowa State (30); Colorado (54) and Baylor (71). Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State were not ranked.
