HALL PLANS - Frank Henzlik, dean of Teachers College from 1931 to 1958, holds plans for the University High School, built in 1955. The building was renamed Henzlik Hall in 1967. Henzlik Hall is now used as classroom and office space.

Frank E. Henzlik was one of the top-ranking educators in the United States. He served the University of Nebraska as a professor of school administration and dean of Teachers College.

Henzlik joined the university in 1924 as professor of school administration and chair of the department. He was appointed dean of Teachers College in 1931, a post he held until July 1, 1958.

Henzlik received his bachelor's degree from Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1916, a bachelor of law degree from the University of Missouri in 1920, a master's degree in 1923 and a doctor of philosophy degree a year later, both from Columbia University.

Before coming to Lincoln, Henzlik taught school and served as an administrator in various Missouri communities.

Henzlik is credited with guiding Teachers College through a stormy period of transition and growth that included the Great Depression. Under his leadership in the college, undergraduate and graduate programs were improved, master and doctor of education degrees were established, and greater service was provided to the schools of Nebraska.

Henzlik was especially well known for working with educational institutions in small towns and cities.

Henzlik Hall is named in honor of his dedication and years of service to the university. Henzlik Hall, originally called University High School and used for the student-teacher practice teaching program, was built in 1955. In 1967, University High was closed. The facility was converted to office and institutional space for Teachers College and renamed Henzlik Hall.
