From the Archives - Administration Hall

Authorized by the Legislature in 1904, the University of Nebraska's original Administration Hall was built in 1905 for $35,300. The original cost estimate was $35,000.

The common brick building with terra-cotta trimmings was designed by Thomas R. Kimball.

Administration Hall served the university for 58 years, providing administrative offices for seven chancellors. The first was E. Benjamin Andrews, who moved into the building in 1905. Other chancellors who served in Administration Hall were Samuel Avery, E. A. Burnett, Chauncey S. Boucher, Reuben G. Gustafson, John K. Selleck and Clifford M. Hardin. Hardin was the first chancellor to move into the university's modern Canfield Administration Building.

Administration Hall was remodelled in 1958 at a cost of $12,257. After administrative offices moved out, the building housed telephone operators, mailing operations and some architecture classes.

The building was razed April 10, 1963 to make room for the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Gardens and Woods Hall.
