Coming soon to the Ross

These movies will show Sept. 17-30 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. For times and more information, call 472-5353 or visit www.theross.org.

• Control Room by Jehane Noujaim, an award-winning Arab-American filmmaker, provides a view of Al-Jazeera's presentation of the second Iraq war to its worldwide Arab audience. In so doing, the movie calls into question many of the prevailing images and positions offered by the U.S. news media. Control Room's view of Al-Jazeera, a network branded "Osama Bin Laden's mouthpiece" and subject of intense criticism from U.S. administration officials for showing images of Iraqi casualties and American POWs, suggests that its views on news reporting might be more in tune with democratic ideals than those of its Western counterparts.

• Metallica: Some Kind of Monster provides an in-depth portrait of the most successful heavy metal band of all time during times of personal and professional challenges while recording its first studio album of original songs in five years. In the tradition of music documentaries such as Gimme Shelter and Don't Look Back, the movie provides truthful introspection and a look at the individuals behind the band and their journey.
