Shankar to play world music Oct. 5

Called the "Godfather of World Music" by George Harrison, sitarist, composer, teacher and writer Ravi Shankar is known worldwide for bringing Indian music to the West. Shankar will perform at the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5.

In a career spanning four decades, Shankar has become India's most recognized musical ambassador. His works include two concertos for sitar and orchestra, the ballet Ghanashyam, and music for films including the award-winning Gandhi, which won him nominations for both an Oscar and a Grammy Award. In 1999, the government of India honored Shankar by awarding him its highest civilian award, the Jewel of India.

An educational lecture will be given at 7 p.m. in the Lied's Steinhart Room.

Tickets for this performance are $38/$33/$28; tickets are half-price for UNL students and those 18 and younger. Call the Lied ticket office at 472-4747 for tickets.
