"Sue's work on Willa Cather made the whole literary world more fully aware of Cather's significance as a writer," said Linda Pratt, chair of the English department and a longtime colleague. "Sue was able to build a community of scholars over the last 20 years, raising the significance of Cather scholarship, and in the process, Sue also raised the prestige of the University of Nebraska."

Rosowski was also the founding director of the Plains Humanities Alliance, one of the National Endowment for the Humanities' Regional Humanities Centers.

Rosowski, 62, had battled cancer, Pratt said. Her husband, Jim Rosowski, is a professor of biology at UNL.

Pratt said the family requests that a memorial fund be created under the direction of the University of Nebraska Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall, Lincoln, Neb., 68508. The Susan Rosowski Cather Endowment Fund will support Cather research.

"Sue's fondest wish was that out of her death, others would help strengthen the university's work on Willa Cather," she said.

As general editor of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition and editor-in-chief of Cather Studies, Rosowski led a research initiative involving scholars at UNL, across the nation and internationally. She directed many Cather seminars and workshops and received a 2004 University of Nebraska Outstanding Research and Creativity Award, among many other awards.
