Victorian fancy quilts topic of March 31 lecture

Virginia Gunn, noted costume and textile historian, will present "The First Art Quilts: The Aesthetic Movement and Late-Victorian Fancy Quilts," at 11:30 a.m. March 31 in the auditorium (Room 11) of the Home Economics Building. Her talk is free and open to the public.

Gunn is the 2005 Visiting Faculty Fellow of the International Quilt Study Center. Her recent research has focused on Quaker women and Quaker-made quilts. She is here to initiate research that will lead to identifying Quaker-made quilts in the IQSC collections. Her work will inform a future exhibition and contribute to the multivolume catalogue of the collections that is currently under preparation with support from the Getty Foundation.

Gunn is a professor of clothing, textiles, and interiors at the University of Akron (Ohio). She teaches courses in history of fashion, history of interior design, textile conservation, and material-culture studies. She is curator of Akron's historic costume and textile collection.

Gunn, a past president of the American Quilt Study Group, was editor of Uncoverings, AQSG's annual volume of research papers, from 1994 to 2003. Her research interests revolve around American textiles and dress of the 19th and 20th centuries including Civil War era quilts, agricultural fairs and their influence on American quiltmaking traditions, as well as the art needlework movement.
