Chancellor offers welcome as term begins

(The following E-mail was issued by Chancellor Harvey Perlman on Aug. 23)

Dear Colleagues;

It's difficult to walk on campus without feeling the energy associated with the start of the school year-new faculty, new students, new staff, and new resolutions about getting accomplished this year what we had hoped to do last year.

I want to welcome all of the new members of our community. We look forward to your contributions to our success and we have very high expectations.

For those of you returning from summer activities elsewhere, welcome back. Hope you accomplished all that you had set out to do (even if it was rest and relaxation). And, for those of you who just stayed here and kept going, thanks for your efforts.

I invite all of you to read the special edition of the Scarlet that will be published on Sept. 8. It will outline many of the significant achievements of our faculty and staff during the past year.

I hope you will also join me on Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Lied Center for the State of the University Address where I will try to capture where we are as a university and what our agenda might be for the coming year.

For those of you new to the university, following the State of the University Address there is the annual all faculty-staff picnic on the Lied Center Plaza (as well as some nearby streets). TIAA-CREF will be sponsoring a special dessert tent at the picnic and we appreciate their support.

Now the idea is that you attend the speech and then go to the picnic. I have noticed, however, that some of you manage to complete your meal even before I have finished speaking. I've asked our Physics Department to help me understand how this is accomplished.

My speech follows a special ceremony that begins at 10 a.m., recognizing our five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 year employees. Nearly 920 individuals will be recognized and thanked for their service to the university.

You are welcome to join me in honoring them at that time as well, should you be up for two hours of festivities at the Lied Center.

As we begin the new semester, let me thank each and every one of you for the many contributions you all make and will make to UNL.

I know I speak for the entire Senior Administrative Team in expressing our enormous pride in what you are accomplishing. It gives all of us renewed energy to try to be supportive of each of you as you work your magic.
