Husker Baseball

Playing an inaugural season in 1889, Husker baseball is the oldest organized sport at UNL.

That first team played three games, going 1-2 with a 23-6 season-opening victory over Doane College.

Pictured at right is the 1893 NU squad, which went undefeated and set a record for season wins at 3-0. With an expanded season schedule, that mark has been eclisped numerous times. The 2005 Huskers hold the newest record for wins in a single season, going 57-15.

Below, Bob Cerv, who played and lettered for the Huskers from 1947 to 1950, swings at a pitch. The Weston, Neb., native led the Huskers to two Big Seven titles.

After graduation, Cerv played nine years in the major leagues. While playing for the Kansas City Athletics, he hit 38 homeruns - a mark which still stands as the record by a professional player in Kansas City.

Cerv was the first Husker to start in an All-Star Game, playing left field for the American League in 1958. He also played on four World Series teams with the Yankees.
