Series of events to celebrate ethnic studies, April 1-7

The Institute for Ethnic Studies is coordinating a series of events April 1-7 to inform campus and local community about the discipline of ethnic studies.

Two events - a lunch reception on April 3 and the Ethnic Studies Spring Celebration on April 7 - are by invitation only. All other events are open to the public.

Events include:

The annual Mexican American Student Association banquet, 6 p.m. March 31 in the Nebraska Union. There is a fee for attending. For information, call 472-7723.

An all-day handgame and dinner, organized by Native American Studies, April 1 at the Indian Center, 1100 Military Road.

The African Student Association will hold Festac, 6 p.m. April 1 in the Nebraska Union. There is a fee for attending. For information, call 310-7550.

A book display featuring books by Ethnic Studies faculty and affiliates and reception will be 3 to 5 p.m., April 3 at Love Library. Ricardo Garcia, professor of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education will give a presentation on storytelling at 3:30 p.m.

A series of brown-bag lunches will feature Ethnic Studies faculty. All lunches are 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. On April 4, Dawne Cury, history and ethnic studies, will present "The Role of Music during Apartheid." On April 5, Cynthia Willis-Esqueda, psychology and ethnic studies, will present, "Legal and Psychological Approaches to Understanding Domestic Violence for American Indian Women." And, on April 6, Amelia Montes, English and ethnic studies, will present, "A Conversation with Emma Pérez."

From 3:30 to 5 p.m. April 5, faculty will offer information on the new Ethnic Studies major in Burnett Hall, room 231.

On April 6 Emma Pérez will give a reading from 2-3:30 p.m. in Andrews Hall, room 228; and Marilyn Chin will offer a poetry reading, 7 p.m., Great Plains Art Gallery. On April 7, Stephanie Campu will present the lecture "Slavery, Space and Gender in the American South" at 7 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium.

OASIS is organizing a film and discussion series at the Culture Center at 6:30 p.m. April 3-5. Films and speakers include: April 3 - "Mistress Madeleine," with discussion led by Victoria Smith, history and ethnic studies; April 4 - "Zoot Suit," with discussion led by Carleen Sanchez, anthropology, geography and ethnic studies; and April 5 - "Parliment Funkadelic: One Nation Under a Groove," with discussion led by Patric Jones, history and ethnic studies.

Beginning at 4 p.m. April 4, the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery will sponsor a discussion and reception for the opening of an exhibit by Michael Cloud. And, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 6, the University of Nebraska State Museum in Morrill Hall is co-sponsoring a reception with Ethnic Studies to showcase the museum's ethnic collection.

The events culminate 8 p.m. April 7 at the Culture Center with a social gathering sponsored by the Institute for Ethnic Studies. Music will be provided by the reggae band RC Dub. The event is free and open to the public (donations accepted for the Hurricane Katrina Relief effort).
