Award-winning pianist to perform at the Lied

Pianist Alexander Kobrin, the 2005 gold medal winner from the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 7:30 p.m. April 4.

Kobrin will perform two rhapsodies, Op. 79 by Brahms; "Fantasies," Op. 116 by Brahms; and "Etudes-Tableaux," Op. 39 by Rachmaninoff.

A pre-performance talk will be presented by Larry Lusk, emeritus professor of piano and founding dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. The talk begins at 7 p.m. in the Lied's Steinhart Room.

Born in Moscow in 1980, Kobrin began his piano studies at age 5 at the Moscow Gnessin Music School. Kobrin had his performance debut at age 8.

In the 1993, he performed his first solo recital in the Moscow's Rachmaninoff Hall. In 2003 Kobrin graduated from the Moscow Conservatory.

Over his career, Kobrin has won several competitions and been awarded prestigious prizes. He has been invited to perform in the world's most important venues in Europe, Japan, United States and Israel.

As his star rises, Kobrin has been invited to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in June and has also been invited to open both Dallas Symphony Orchestra's and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's opening concerts of the 2006/2007 season.
