UCARE student adds multicultural touch to Lied Center marketing

BY GITTE OSTERMANN, FOR THE SCARLET

With a double major in Spanish and advertising, Ashley Pritchard didn't really need extra work. But sometimes, when the perfect opportunity knocks, you have to open the door.

In Pritchard's case, opportunity is a UCARE project that capitalizes on her language skills while building knowledge of marketing communications.

Pritchard is participating in her second UCARE project. This semester, she has a marketing internship at the Lied Center. Her advertising knowledge and Spanish skills turned out to be a perfect match for the Lied's need to reach out to the Hispanic population in Nebraska.

"Ashley is a unique resource in terms of helping us tap into a key new audience," said Laura Sweet, director of audience development and communications at the Lied. "Her double major is a valuable combination helping us integrate multicultural advertising initiatives into our mainstream media plans and promotions."

Pritchard translated the Lied Center brochure, which is available in Spanish on request, and worked with a graduate student to format the Lied Web site into a bilingual English/Spanish version.

Pritchard has been continuously improving her work results as a marketing intern.

"Ashley is amazing for a junior," Sweet said. "She is at a very high level for an intern and produces quality, professional work. She is thorough, conscientious, I can trust her completely and she has definitely exceeded my expectations over this short period of time. She is an essential and vital part of our department."

Pritchard creates complete media plans and works with all regional media outlets. The internship gives her an opportunity to learn important skills in a professional environment, something no credit hour class could have provided. She appreciates being part of the UCARE program.

"UCARE allowed me to explore future career opportunities. I gained valuable experiences that I'll be able to use for my future career and the rest of my life."

UCARE, funded by the Pepsi Endowment, supports opportunities for undergraduates to work alongside faculty and directly participate in the campus's research or creative activities. Undergraduates may apply for UCARE awards to incorporate a research or creative experience into their undergraduate education. For more information, go online to www.unl.edu/ucare.
