The update, which began last year, includes the addition of a student area in the basement with vending machines, patio furniture, padded benches chairs and a couch. The libraries computer lab has moved from the basement to the main floor to provide easy and immediate access to faculty, staff and students. And, the reference desk on the main floor has moved to a more visible location to better assist patrons.

While based on student feedback, the improvements also mirror the University Libraries' philosophy to create spaces that are "academic living rooms" - places where students can gather together or study individually in a comfortable, dynamic environment.

Tracy Bicknell-Holmes, chair of Research and Instructional Services, says the changes are key in meeting students' current study habits. There are big study areas with individual study tables and comfortable furniture as well as seminar rooms that provide opportunities for groups to work together on a project and smaller rooms available for individual study.

"We look forward to students discovering CYT's wonderful study space as an alternative to the Union or residential halls," Bicknell-Holmes said.

An open house, 3-5 p.m. Sept. 11, will offer faculty and staff tours of the improvements. An all-day open house for students is scheduled for Oct. 19. Students will also be asked to vote on a new name for the study area.
