Students volunteer for ABC
Dan Barrett never believed he would see construction management converted into a spectator sport.

Then ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," came to Lincoln.
Barrett and junior Nick Torgusson, president and vice president of the student chapter of the National Association of Home Builders, respectively, organized a group of student volunteers who helped build a home for a family in need.
In each episode of Extreme Makeover, the television production demolishes and rebuilds a home for a needy family within seven days. The production started a project in northeast Lincoln on Oct. 27.
Barrett and Torgusson had little time to organize student volunteers.
"This happened really quickly," Barrett said. "But we saw it as an opportunity for our chapter members to see how things get organized on a job site and learn about teamwork. It's a great learning experience."
While performing a myriad of construction duties, the students helped make sure workers had appropriate gear and kept the street safe around the site. Their work helped the crew reveal the completed home to the Lincoln family on Nov. 3.
"It's nice for the university," Torgusson said. "It's just one more thing that makes Nebraska's construction management program great and gets students involved in NAHB."
