Rep Theatre twists holiday classic

"Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol," a creative re-interpretation of the Charles Dickens' classic, will play the Lied Center's Johnny Carson Theater Dec. 19-23.

The one-man show is presented by the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. nightly, with a 2 p.m. matinee Dec. 23.

"Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol" is written and performed by Tom Mula. The show follows Jacob Marley's behind-the-scenes efforts as he not only attempts to save Scrooge's soul, but his own.

Mula has been an award-winning playwright, actor and director for nearly 30 years. He received two Joseph Jefferson Awards in 1991 for his play "Golem" at the National Jewish Theatre and for his work on Nicole Hollander's hit musical, "Sylvia's Real Good Advice."

In 1995, Adams Media published Mula's novel, "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol," which became a Chicago Tribune best seller. The audio version was broadcast nationwide on NPR for six seasons; the play version received the prestigious Cunningham Prize from the Goodman School of Drama at Depaul. It premiered at Chicago's Goodman Theatre and received an After Dark Award. Since then, it has been performed at more than 50 theatres across the country and in Canada.

UNL's Nebraska Repertory Theatre provides professional opportunities for students and faculty members in collaboration with professional artists-in-residence. "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol" is directed by Virginia Smith, artistic director for the Nebraska Repertory Theater.

Ticket are $32. UNL students with a valid NCard and youth 18 and under may purchase tickets for half price.
