Ross, NET Radio offer Met opera in Lincoln

Afternoon matinee performances at New York's Metropolitan Opera House are coming to Lincoln.

The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and NET Radio open "The Metropolitan Opera Goes to the Movies" - a series of high definition, digital stereo surround sound screenings - Jan. 13-14 with "The Magic Flute."

Directed by Julie Taymor, Mozart's "The Magic Flute" includes dancing bears, flying birds and a giant serpent all brought to life through the use of puppetry. The abridged 100-minute version of Mozart's opera is sung in English.

Other performance dates in the series include "I Puritani" (Jan. 20-21) and "The First Emperor" (Jan. 27-28). The series will also include "Eugene Onegin," "The Barber of Seville," and "Il Trittico," however, performance dates have not been announced.

All performances in the series will be broadcast from the Metropolitan stage into select movie theaters (including the Ross) equipped with high definition digital projection and stereo surround sound.

Show times and additional information are available online at www.theross.org or by calling 472-5353. Admission is $18 general and $15 for students, seniors, children and members of the Friends of the Ross. Seating is limited.
