'Our Daily Bread,' 'The Secret Life of Words' open Feb. 23 at the Ross

The path of food - from field to dinner table - is traced in Nickolaus Geyrhalter's documentary, "Our Daily Bread," opening Feb. 23 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Playing through March 1, "Our Daily Bread" reveals the little known world of high-tech agriculture through wide-screen images that seem right out of a science fiction movie. In sealed rooms, as sterile as computer microprocessor factories, chicks hatch while being closely monitored. A huge hose sucks salmon out of a fjord. Metal teeth chomp fields of sunflowers that, with the aid of chemicals, wither at just the right time. On a mechanized conveyer system, chickens are cut up and pigs gutted in seconds - although cattle take a bit longer.

Also playing Feb. 23 to March 1 at the Ross is "The Secret Life of Words," starring Tim Robbins and Sarah Polley.

"The Secret Life of Words," written and directed by Isabel Coixet, follows Hanna (Polley), a factory worker who lives alone in a barren apartment, wears a hearing aid and keeps to herself with a rigorous daily routine of identical meals, a fresh bar of soap every day and needlepoint work at night.

While on an extended holiday in northern Ireland, she volunteers as a nurse, tending to a burn victim Josef (Robbins) stationed on an oil rig. While Hanna coaxes him back to health, Josef, who has suffered temporary blindness, reaches out to her urgently, wanting to connect. As his brutish and passionate demeanor contrasts with Hanna's solemn and quiet manner, Hanna initially refuses to reveal anything about herself, even her real name. But she soon she starts to recognize parallels between her isolation and that of the others on the oil rig.

Hanna eventually grows to care for Josef and shares with him a painfully severe secret from her past that opens wounds and doors.
