Woods family donates Liu's 'Meal II' painting to Sheldon

Marjorie Woods of Lincoln has donated "Meal II," a painting by Hung Liu, to the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in memory of her husband, Thomas C. Woods. Also with the donation, one of the museum's galleries will be named in honor of the Woods family.

The donation continues the tradition of the Woods Family and the Woods Charitable Fund of acquiring examples by talented American artists for the Sheldon collections. These have included important works by Marsden Hartley, Georgia O'Keeffe, Mark Rothko, Wayne Thiebaud and many other artists.

"'Meal II' enhances the Sheldon's contemporary collection in adding important canvas by a gifted artist whose work was not presently represented," said Janice Driesbach, Sheldon director. "The painting is particularly significant in that it is characteristic of the artist's work in referencing her Chinese heritage and in presenting a beautiful composition that alludes to compelling social issues."

"Meal II" is on view in the Sheldon's permanent collection galleries.

Sheldon will celebrate the naming of a gallery in honor of the Frank H. and Nelle Cochrane Woods family and their descendents from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28. The public is welcome.
