Group offers interactions for women from around the world

 BY SARA PIPHER, UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

A new conversation group for women from around the world meets every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the University Lutheran Chapel.

Faculty, staff, students, spouses of students and community members are invited to share stories of life in Lincoln and information about navigating the city's social services, health care, recreation and more. The meetings are sponsored by UNL's Office of International Affairs. Children are welcome and daycare and activities are provided.

"I see students all the time and advise them on different things, mostly immigration, and every time a student brings a dependent, they ask for programs for their wives. They're looking for groups for conversation that will get their wives connected to a larger community," said Shelby Sack, an international student adviser. "Many of these women have F2 visa status, which means they are not allowed to work or go to school, so they're very isolated. We wanted to offer something especially for them."

Sack and her group of volunteers hope the group will provide useful information - such as how to find a pediatrician - as well as fun and conversation. When the group is more established, she plans to bring in guest speakers to give mini-programs on health care and other community services. For the time being, she is focusing on spreading the word and welcoming as many women as possible to the meetings.

"I lived in Japan for a while, my daughter was born there, and I had to ask favors of my friends all the time," Sack said. "I remember wishing there was just one place where I could go with my questions. That's what we hope to accomplish with this group."
