CASNR Week events open with April 12 bull fry

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will celebrate CASNR Week April 12-19. The theme, "Fulfill your Fate in '08" celebrates students opting to earn an education through CASNR.

"It's just a really good week to dedicate to CASNR, to students and to faculty," said Cassidy Robinson of Elm Creek, a sophomore agribusiness major and publicity chair of the CASNR Week committee.

All CASNR Week events are open to the public.

Events include two popular events - the UNL Rodeo Club's annual rodeo and the Burr Hall Bull Fry. Proceeds from the bull fry - 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 12 - will go to the family of Jeremy Wach, a firefighter killed in a Wymore fire.

The Burr Hall Car Show and Tractor Display is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 12.

On April 13, CASNR will hold its awards banquet. The reception is at 5 p.m. and the banquet is at 6 p.m. The speaker will be Anita Estes, a senior CASNR student and former national Future Farmers of America officer.

The student-organized week also will feature a Club Adviser Luncheon from noon-1 p.m. on April 14. Lunch on the Lawn, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and Community Night, 5-7 p.m., are April 15. Hartley, Huntington and Clinton Elementary Schools, Ruth Staples Child Development Lab and all CASNR faculty, staff and students, including their children, are invited to the free Community Night.

An International Study Tour Poster Session will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. April 15-17.

Love Memorial Hall will have a chili feed April 16 from 5-7 p.m with a free will donation. At 7 p.m. that day, the Biochemistry Club will host "Career Opportunities in Science." The event is a panel hosted by the Biochemistry Club, the Forensic Science Club and the Food Science Club.

On April 17, there will be a blood drive from 11 a.m.-3 p.m, and Alpha Gamma Rho will host a barbecue from 5-8 p.m. Tickets are $5.

The UNL Rodeo will be the main event April 18-19 as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

"It's the big anniversary," Robinson said. "It's 50 years, so it's pretty exciting."

The UNL Rodeo will be at the Lancaster Event Center, beginning April 18 at 7 p.m. A dance following the rodeo will feature Jim Rice and The Final Round Band. There will be a barbecue following the 1 p.m. rodeo performance on April 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Tickets to the rodeo are $10 for adults and $8 for UNL students with an NCard and anyone with military identification. Tickets for children ages 6-12 are $5; children ages 5 and under are free.

The 7:30 p.m. April 19 performance will be dedicated to breast cancer awareness and is designated as "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" night. Contestants will be dressed in pink attire, and the audience is encouraged to do the same. A portion of the ticket proceeds and donations made that night will be donated to breast cancer research.
