New online system tracks room usage

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Institutional Research and Planning has gone digital in keeping track of campus room use.

"We started working toward an online system about two and a half years ago," said Jennifer Dam, campus planner with IRP. "The system has been up and functional for us now for about nine months."

The online system - accessible with a log-in name and password - includes floor plans of campus buildings with each office labeled per its use. The system can also break down room use by category in a particular department, group of buildings or campus wide.

"We're still out there every day doing our walkthroughs to verify information provided by campus departments," Dam said. "But, when we get back, this system allows us real-time updates when new information is entered."

IRP administrators learned about the system during a visit to the University of Missouri in Columbia.

"Space is a very precious resource for the university," said Dam. "We need to be sure that we are using it in the most efficient and effective way possible. And, this software is one way we can accomplish that."
