‘Showtime’ auditions are March 20 at the Lied

“Showtime at the Apollo on Tour,” the touring production of the original “Apollo Amateur Night,” will hold auditions at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on March 20. Twelve to 14 amateur entertainers will be selected to compete in “Showtime at the Apollo on Tour” at the Lied Center on May 1. The winner of the May 1 competition will receive $1,000 and two plane tickets to New York to participate in the “Apollo Amateur Show” at the Apollo Theater.

Individuals or groups interested in auditioning can download an application at the Lied Center’s Web site, www.liedcenter.org, or can pick up applications at the Lied Center from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. An application can be mailed; called 472-4700 to request a mailed application. Audition applications will be taken until March 12.

Up to 250 individuals or groups will be allowed to audition for the Apollo Theater judges. If 250 people or groups have not registered by March 12, the Lied Center may open the audition to walk-ins on March 20. Advance registrations are encouraged. This audition is open to amateurs only.

Sign-in for auditions will begin at 9 a.m. March 20, with auditions beginning at 11. Each contestant will be given up to 90 seconds to audition. The Lied Center can provide a CD/cassette system, a piano and a microphone system, but those auditioning must provide any additional accompaniment.

There is no cost to audition. Tickets for the performance on May 1 are $25, $20 and $15; tickets are half-price for college students and those 18 and under. Call the Lied box office at 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 for tickets.
