Japanese artist wins botanical print contest

 NEBRASKA STATEWIDE ARBORETUM

A Japanese artist who learned about the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s 2004 botanical print competition through the Internet is this year’s winner.

Yoshiko Kamei’s works were chosen because of her careful attention to detail and three-dimensional quality, said Karma Larsen, Nebraska Statewide Arboretum communications associate. Prints of her acrylic paintings of purple coneflower, pictured at right, and oakleaf hydrangea are available from the arboretum.

“This was the first time submissions came in from overseas,” Larsen said. “However, it’s not surprising. Japan has a long tradition of botanical illustration, and appreciation for the beauty of plants is really universal. The hydrangea looks like a live specimen, and the coneflower painting, with flowers both in and out of shadow, contains a very precise detail of the central disk.”

For the 2004 competition, artists were invited to submit illustrations of any of the plants recognized by the arboretum’s GreatPlants program.

Kamei’s work has been in both individual and group exhibitions throughout Japan. She belongs to several botanical art organizations, her work has been reproduced in a number of publications and she has won many awards, including the “Award Exhibition of Botanical Illustration of Japan.”
