Film-makers could win $1,000

The first "Real Nebraska Movie Contest" will give UNL students the chance to win $1,000. The campuswide competition asks students to produce a short film to show why "There is no place like Nebraska." The top entry will receive $1,000 with three additional prizes of $250 each.

Individuals or teams can enter the contest from Sept. 14-16 and will have until Nov. 1 to complete their film for the contest. Online votes, guest judges and students will choose the three $250 "Viewers' Choice" winners. The $1,000 first prize will be announced at a campuswide film festival in March, when all entries will be shown and a panel of guest judges will name the grand-prize winner.

The contest is a variation of the popular "Real Nebraska" project featuring UNL students on an interactive Web site. Alan Cerveny, dean of admissions, said the contest is a way to keep the program fresh and exciting.

"We have extremely creative students at UNL," Cerveny said. "We want to tap into that energy and provide them with an opportunity to share their unique perspectives on UNL in interesting and entertaining ways."

An information booth will be set up in the Nebraska Union between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15 and in the Nebraska East Union Sept. 16. Students can pick up information, sign up to check out cameras and submit their applications.
