Preservation Hall band, BeauSoleil perform Sept. 23

Louisiana music featured in Lied doubleheader

Louisiana has been the birthplace of some unique musical genres, including Cajun and New Orleans jazz. Two Lied Center favorites who carry on the traditions of both musical forms, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, will perform a doubleheader of American roots music at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23.

In 1961, Preservation Hall was opened in the French Quarter of New Orleans. It has long been a room for old-time jazz legends to gather and play and has grown to legendary status. Now the Preservation Hall Jazz Band carries the New Orleans brand of jazz around the world in live performances and recordings.

For 25 years, the members of BeauSoleil have carried on the lively music of their Cajun ancestors, led by Michael Doucet, who sings, writes songs and plays the fiddle. The band has been nominated for many Grammys and won in 1997 for the album L'amour ou la Folie. BeauSoleil is a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, and Garrison Keillor calls them "the best Cajun band in the world."

A pre-performance talk will be offered 30 minutes before curtain in the Lied's Steinhart Room.

Tickets for this performance are $35, $30 and $25; tickets are half price for UNL students and those 18 and younger. Call the Lied ticket office at 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 for tickets.
