Faculty success stories abound at UNL - Computer scientists work to create more reliable software

The hiring this year of two computer scientists boosted UNL's strength in computer science, especially in the arena of software dependability.

Gregg Rothermel, Jensen Chair of Software Engineering, and Matt Dwyer, Henson professor of engineering, joined UNL with considerable practical experience in industry and research programs in academe. Both work on the same problem - ensuring that software is sufficiently dependable - but they approach it from different angles. It's this diversity of approaches that makes their work exciting, they said.

Dwyer's research involves using static analysis techniques to predict the behavior of a software program before it's deployed. This is critical for industries like aviation or medicine, where a software malfunction could be deadly. Rothermel has focused on testing products as they evolve - making sure revisions work with other products as promised.

The two approaches have similarities that when merged can produce substantially more effective software and analysis tools.

"We had areas of natural connection," Dwyer said, "but we also bring successful funding records with industry and government. And we'll be able to use our combined expertise to make bigger and better things happen.

"Our real goal is to have our software engineering group become one of the top five in the world. It won't happen overnight, but it's a very realistic goal."
