A Piece of University History

As the nation prepares for a presidential election in less than a month, we thought we'd pull some information about presidential visits to our university.

President Richard Nixon presented Husker football coach Bob Devaney, left, with a plaque in celebration of the team's No. 1 ranking when he visited UNL on Jan. 14, 1971. Team co-captains Dan Schneiss (next to Nixon) and Jerry Murtaugh (right) joined the president on stage. Although the visit came at a politically active time on college campuses, administrators praised the behavior of UNL students during the visit. Reports said Devaney received greater applause than Nixon, who quipped that he should "run for something in this state."

Pictured at right is President Richard Nixon's visit in January 1971. In addition to praising our football team, he discussed the right of 18-year-olds to vote and his high priority of ending the Vietnam War.

Four other presidents have visited the University of Nebraska: Theodore Roosevelt visited eight years after his presidency ended; Harry Truman visited in 1950; Gerald Ford came in 1976 after his term; and George H.W. Bush was here in 1989.

In this weekly feature, the Scarlet takes a look back at a moment of UNL's past through a historical photo, story or short trivia item.
