Obituary: Service for Rosowski is Dec. 10

A memorial service for Susan Rosowski, Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English and expert on Nebraska writer Willa Cather, will begin at 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1144 M St.

Rosowski died Nov. 2 at age 62 of cancer. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Whittier College in California in 1964, and her master of arts degree in 1967 and doctorate in 1974, both from the University of Arizona-Tucson. She taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha from 1976 to 1981, then at UNL from 1982 until her death.

Since 1983, Rosowski had given more than 100 presentations at professional meetings and more than 250 talks to community groups in the region. She directed five international seminars on Cather and was director of the Cather Project and the Plains Humanities Alliance. She was editor in chief of the Cather Archive and general editor of the Cather Scholarly Edition. She was a script consultant on TV productions of Cather’s works or life. She received many literary awards and the NU Outstanding Research and Creative Activity award in 2004. The Western Literature Association has created the Susan J. Rosowski Award for Creative Mentoring and Teaching in Western American Literature.

Survivors include her husband, Jim, a professor in the UNL School of Biological Sciences; two sons and one daughter-in-law; two grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law.
