Applications sought for Young Artist Awards

The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is seeking applications for the 2005 Nebraska Young Artist Awards.

The Nebraska Young Artist Awards annually recognize juniors in Nebraska high schools who are gifted and talented in one of the college's areas: visual art, dance, music, theatre, or film and new media. UNL faculty will judge the applications, and the winning students will be invited to a special day of recognition on April 13. Honored students will take tours of the arts facilities, attend classes, meet faculty and college students and have lunch. Their parents will also be invited, and they will also take tours and receive information on careers in the arts and college curriculum.

Students selected to participate in the Nebraska Young Artist Awards will also be asked to nominate the teacher who provided them with the greatest amount of mentoring and support in the development of their special talents.

The day will conclude with an awards ceremony. Students will receive a certificate, as well as an original piece of artwork commissioned for this event made by a printmaking student in the Department of Art and Art History.

To apply, students must submit an application, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or private instructor, and submit a sample of their work.

Instructions and the application are available at this Web site or by calling Kathe Andersen at 472-9355. Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 10.
