A Piece of University History
Here is an image of the first page of the University of Nebraska Charter; the date on the bottom reads, March 1869. The first page of the charter states that "the object of such institution shall be to afford to the inhabitants of this State, the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the various branches of literature, science and the arts." The creation of the University of Nebraska and the developing of the charter arose from the provisions of the Morrill Act of 1862, which endowed lands for public universities. The Nebraska state legislature accepted a charter for the University on Feb. 15, 1869, about two years after Nebraska became a state. The charter was signed by Gov. David Butler and William McLennon, speaker of the Nebraska House of Representatives, and Edward B. Taylor, president of the Nebraska Senate. The state had a two-house legislature at its founding.
Note: This weekly feature looks at some aspect of the university's history. Today's item was provided by the University Libraries' Archives. To submit an item or idea, call 472-8844.
