'Let's Talk Art' series featured at Sheldon

Norman Geske, director emeritus of UNL's Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, will deliver a four-part lecture series at the Sheldon in October. The "Let's Talk Art" lecture series will be presented at 2 p.m. Oct 2, 9, 16 and 23 at the Sheldon.

Geske's talks will relate to each gallery within the newly re-installed permanent collection. The following subjects will be discussed: "Marsden Hartley: American Modernist," Oct. 2; "The Legend of Robert Henri: Myth?" Oct. 9; "The 'Art' of Photography," Oct. 16; and "Building a Collection: The Rohman Gallery," Oct. 23.

The "Let's Talk Art" lecture series is sponsored by the Nebraska Art Association and is designed to provide members and guests insight into the whys and wherefores of forming museum collections, and their importance within the community.

Geske was director of the university galleries from 1953 to 1983. During his career, he oversaw the construction of the Sheldon, the growth of both university and Nebraska Art Association collections and the development of landmark exhibitions, including the 1968 Venice Bienniale.

"Norman Geske's long involvement with the Sheldon's collections and ability to communicate his enthusiasm for his subject promise lively observations that will engage both art lovers and first time visitors," said Janice Driesbach, director of the Sheldon.

The Philip Johnson-designed gallery houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 pieces focusing on American art. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m. Admission to the Sheldon is free of charge and the building is accessible to those with special needs.
