Hunhoff to address graduates
UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS
Approximately 1,350 students will receive degrees when UNL holds commencement exercises, 9:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Sister Phyllis Hunhoff, the former director of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, will give the commencement address and receive an honorary doctor of humane letters. Chancellor Harvey Perlman will preside at the exercises.
Due to construction of the Antelope Valley Project south of the Devaney Center, those attending commencement are urged to use the 27th Street entrance to State Fair Park. Shuttle service will be available to and from parking areas.
Sister Hunhoff was associated with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital for 37 years. She assumed the directorship of the hospital in 1965 at age 33, armed with a nursing degree, faith in God and the support of her monastery, the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton, S.D. She was Madonna's president and CEO from 1965 to 1989, was president of the Madonna Foundation from 1990 to 2001 and a consultant to the foundation until 2003.
The hospital has become one of the finest rehabilitation hospitals in the United States, focused on research-based patient-centered care.
Since 1993, she has served as associate oblate director of the Sacred Heart Monastery, where she leads a local community of about 200 oblates of all faiths interested in following the Rule of St. Benedict. She has served on numerous professional, civic and educational boards and capacities.
She holds a nursing diploma from Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, and a bachelor's degree from Mount Marty College in Yankton, a master's degree from the University of San Francisco, and a certificate in corporate ministry theology from St. Louis University.
December UNL doctoral candidates will be honored in a hooding ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in Kimball Recital Hall. Doctoral candidates will receive their diplomas at the Dec. 17 commencement exercises at the Devaney Center.
A drop-off area for graduates and mobility-restricted guests will be available on the south side of the Devaney Center on Dec. 17. Sign language interpreters for hearing impaired individuals will be provided on-screen by HuskerVision. Guests in wheelchairs will be seated on the northeast corner of the arena floor or in section B-11. Golf carts will be located at the ramps on the exterior north and south sides of the Devaney Center to assist disabled guests entering and leaving the building.
Admission is free to the hooding and commencement ceremonies, and tickets are not required.
