Rec center offers exercise options for faculty, staff

BY PATRICK BYRNE, FOR THE SCARLET

Instead of sitting at a computer or in the library, Brett Ratcliffe does his research trudging through mud and lifting rocks and logs in tropical jungles, searching for Dynastine Scarab Beetles.

Working in that extreme environment, Ratcliffe - an entomology professor and curator of insects with the University of Nebraska State Museum - is sure to stay in good health. To maintain fitness, the 60-year-old Ratcliffe works out at the Sapp Recreation Center five days a week, two hours a visit.

"I like what I do," Ratcliffe said. "That's why I stay fit."

According to Chris Dulak, assistant director for marketing and development with Campus Recreation, Ratcliffe is one of a number of faculty/staff who use the recreation center.

"We basically offer to faculty and staff what we offer to the students," Dulak said.

Use of the rec center is $21.50 per month for faculty and staff. That cost includes access to all services offered including the STOTT Pilates Mat Essentials course, personal wellness assessment to set fitness and nutrition goals, use of all athletic facilities, and massage from trained personnel.

Ratcliffe finds aerobic and weight room workouts as the most advantageous.

"It's a great rec. The weight room is well stocked and you don't have long waits for the equipment," Ratcliffe said. "It sure is better than the old, musty weight room of 40 years ago in the basement of the Coliseum."

Rec center employees are trying to draw more faculty and staff memberships. A buddy workout board has been established to help motivate university employees to socialize, exercise and enjoy the rec center's facilities.

"The goal is to show that exercise is not a chore," Dulak said. "You shouldn't look at it as a problem to go to the rec."

During regular university operations, the rec center is open 6 a.m. to midnight Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday.
