COMING HOME - Enrique Martinez Celaya's sculpture of a tarred and feathered boy confronting a gigantic elk has been donated to the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Celaya will present public lectures on campus Aug. 29-30.

"Coming Home" is a sculpture of a tarred and feathered boy confronting a gigantic elk by Enrique Martinez Celaya. The sculpture is a gift from the Dieter Rosenkranz Collection in Berlin, Germany.

The "Coming Home" exhibition also includes related drawings and photographs.

Born in 1964 in Palos, Cuba, Celaya began his art training at age 11 as an apprentice to an academic painter. After a period of studying physics in graduate school, he earned a masters in fine arts at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Although trained as a painter, he also works in sculpture, photography, drawing, watercolor, performance and installation. His art has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, and works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and others.

A new book, "Enrique Martinez Celaya, Early Work," featuring essays by Sheldon curator Dan Siedell, accompanies the exhibition, which will be on view through Oct. 29.

Martinez Celaya will present two public lectures in the Sheldon's Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. The first lecture is 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 and is followed by a reception and book signing. At 5 p.m. Aug. 30, the artist and Dan Siedell, Sheldon curator, will discuss their collaboration.
