Estimated value of Kooser column clears $1 million grow

 BY SARA PIPHER, UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Ted Kooser's Midas touch continues to turn poetry into gold for UNL.

The Pulitzer prize-winning author and former U.S. poet laureate's weekly column, "American Life in Poetry," reaches an estimated 2 million readers each week. To date, the series has generated an estimated advertising value of more than $1 million for UNL.

According to newly released data from the Poetry Foundation of Chicago, Kooser's columns have appeared in more than 105 newspapers (including the Scarlet, see Page 4) and on more than 1,000 blogs in the last 18 months. These figures do not include the significant number of smaller newspapers that receive the column through mailings and e-mails from their state press associations. Online, the column recently surpassed 100 million media impressions.

"We receive many supportive e-mails from both readers and from the poets we feature," Kooser said. "Most poets, often published in small magazines with limited readership, may find no more than a few hundred readers, and we make it possible for them to get their work in front of tens of thousands. And their publishers are happy as well, receiving publicity for their books."

If the columns have raised the UNL's profile nationally, Kooser believes the attention is well deserved.

"None of this would be possible without the cooperation and support of the English department," Kooser noted.

Kooser served as Poet Laureate from 2004-2006. He is the author of numerous books of poetry and essays, including his most recent, a collaboration with Steve Cox, "Writing Brave and Free: Encouraging Words for People Who Want to Start Writing."
