E-mail added to inclement weather announcements

Campus closures go digital

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Weather-related closures of UNL are going digital.

Adding a fourth avenue of communication for faculty, staff and students, UNL has expanded weather-related closure announcements to electronic mail.

"This year we will institute an 'e-mail to all' message if campus is closing due to inclement weather," said David Fitzgibbon, manager of broadcast services for University Communications. "The message will automatically go to all faculty, staff and students that have registered UNL e-mail addresses."

In the event of winter storms, Chancellor Harvey Perlman decides whether the university should close based on the recommendation of Chris Jackson, vice chancellor for business and finance.

Weather-related closures will be posted on the UNL Web page, www.unl.edu. Also, radio and television stations should be notified by 6 a.m. for day classes and 2 p.m. for night classes.

Selected positions - such as police and snow-removal personnel - have been identified as essential during weather closings. Those employees are made aware of the designation when hired. Employees should assume they are not essential during weather emergencies unless they have been told otherwise.

If UNL closes during the day to allow students and employees to get home safely, campus will be notified through deans, directors and department chairs.

The university operator will also provide closure information to anyone who calls UNL's main switchboard, 472-7211.

"Through these methods of notification, everyone should get the message if the university closes due to inclement weather," Fitzgibbon said.

In the event of a closure, individuals who have tickets to athletic events or performances on campus, should call ahead to see if those events will be held.
