'Namesake' begins Ross run March 30

"The Namesake," a film about ties to family and birthplace and the loneliness of living far from home, opens March 30 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Showing through April 12, "The Namesake" chronicles the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta, India, to New York City evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld a new world without forgetting the old. Parents Ashokey and Ashima long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, however they take pride in the opportunities the move afford their children. Paradoxically, their son Gogol is torn between finding his own unique identity without losing his heritage.

"The Namesake" (rated PG-13 for sexuality/nudity, a scene of drug use, some disturbing images and brief language) plays the Ross through April 12.

Also at the Ross is "Berliner Schule," a retrospective of contemporary German cinema, curated by Marco Abel, assistant professor of English at UNL. The event features 12 films and filmmakers Christoph Hochhausler and Benjamin Heisenberg.

Festival passes are available; $25 general admission and $15 students.
