'Flora of Nebraska' details state's plants

BY STEVE RESS, UNL WATER CENTER

Complete details of nearly 2,000 native and naturalized Nebraska plant species can be found in "Flora of Nebraska," a new book from UNL that ranks among the most comprehensive and definitive of any detailing Nebraska plants.

The book features nearly 1,000 pages of well-organized information including past, present and potential future status of all plant species along with keys, detailed descriptions and distribution maps for all native and introduced Nebraska plants growing outside cultivation.

"Flora of Nebraska" is written by Robert Kaul, a retired UNL botany professor and now research professor and curator of botany at the University of Nebraska State Museum, Lincoln; retired University of Nebraska at Omaha biology professor David Sutherland; and Steven Rolfsmeier, a botanical consultant and manager in Chadron.

About two-thirds of the plant species detailed in the book are native to Nebraska; the others are naturalized from elsewhere, especially Europe and Asia, Kaul said.

"This native flora includes species of tall, short and mixed-grass prairies, as well as eastern deciduous and western coniferous forests. Some species in the northern Sandhills are relics of pre-historic glacial times, when summer climates there were cooler," he said.

The book details how Nebraska plant species have changed in distribution and abundance since the beginning of European settlement in the mid-19th century.

The book includes color plates and line drawings of native and naturalized plants and almost 2,000 maps. The maps depict county-by-county distribution of the listed plants.

"Flora of Nebraska" is available for $60 per copy and can be ordered online at http://nebraskamaps.unl.edu.
