Program seeks applications for July 13 to Oct. 14 events

'Sheldon Connections' to transform museum space into performance/gathering place

BY TOM WHITE, SHELDON MEMORIAL ART GALLERY

Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery has initiated a new program, "Sheldon Connections," which aims to transform the museum's exhibition spaces on the north side of the second floor into a dynamic public site from July 13 through Oct. 14.

Sheldon is soliciting and considering applications for project ideas that are designed to be participatory, experimental and flexible. One of the goals of the program is to entice new audiences, such as young adults and those of college age, and enhance the experiences of the regular Sheldon audience. The spaces are intended to include events, activities and exhibitions such as slide jams, performances, critiques, and classes that are limited only by participant imaginations. A gathering space with comfortable seating and a beverage service are under consideration.

Rita Hermann, who coordinates the program with the help of a steering committee, said, "Sheldon Connections was envisioned as an opportunity, provided by needed building improvements, to share the museum as a resource in new ways. The initiative is an invitation to the community. The steering committee, Sheldon staff and I are intent on structuring an experimental process where we offer the institution of Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery to those who make application with projects that explore the use of this space in innovative ways."

She added that the "connections' name helps explain the program's main goal to establish new relationships and expand existing ones between the Sheldon, spectators and participants

"This is a call for all of us to use our imaginations - in an exploration of artistic and educational ideas - to design vibrant displays and projects. It's a chance to participate, in some capacity, in the widely diverse processes of art-making," she said.

Application guidelines are available online at www.sheldon.unl.edu. For more information, contact Hermann at rhermann3@unl.edu or 472-2461.

Informal informational sessions about the program are planned during a study/hangout opportunity at Sheldon in the Great Hall from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 28 and noon to 5 p.m. April 29. Steering committee members and Hermann will be available to help answer questions. Review of applications will begin May 1.

Connections events will be advertised locally and posted online at www.sheldon.unl.edu.
