Collaboration creates DVD, materials on responsible research conduct

A collaborative effort has produced a DVD and resources to help graduate students deal with issues that can arise while conducting research for masters' or doctoral degrees.

The UNL Office of Research and Graduate Studies, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film and NET Learning Services teamed up on the project. The DVD features short dramatic vignettes illustrating some of the issues graduate students often encounter in conducting research. The DVD was unveiled at the UNL Research Fair (April 10-12) and provides the basis for discussions at an upcoming workshop for approximately 100 graduate students.

Research and Graduate Studies received a grant from the national Council of Graduate Schools to conduct the project with funds provided by the National Science Foundation. The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film provided the scriptwriter and actors, and NET Learning Services produced the DVD.

"This resource will be invaluable to enhance training of our graduate students in the appropriate conduct of research and to foster successful development of future scholars with strong Nebraska values," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, UNL vice chancellor for research.

This is the second project undertaken by these partners. In 2005 they created a DVD and resource materials for "Managing Difficult Situations," which was aimed at providing solutions for issues arising between graduate teaching assistants and their students.

The "Responsible Conduct of Research" DVD addresses three specific issues - research misconduct, conflict of interest and appropriate authorship designation.

Virginia Smith, UNL associate professor of theatre arts and scriptwriter for the project, commented on the value of the project for the UNL theatre students who were involved. "Not only were they able to get experience in a professional video environment, but they have copies of the result to keep and an NET credit for their resumes," she said.
