Ross opens fall semester with 'Once,' 'You Kill Me'

A tale of love wrapped around music and a romantic comedy delving into the life of mafia hitman open Aug. 24 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Breaking free of the traditional Hollywood musical, the Irish romance "Once" explores a street musician's love for a Czech Republic immigrant. The pair, played by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, bond over a shared love of music (he plays the guitar, she the piano). The film chronicles a tentative rapport as both are weighed down by past relationship baggage.

Also opening Aug. 24 is "You Kill Me." Directed by John Dahl, the film showcases Frank Falenczyk (Ben Kingsley), a hit-man whose work for the Buffalo-based mafia has been hampered by alcoholism.

Falenczyk goes to San Francisco where Alcoholics Anonymous awaits, as does Dave (Bill Pullman), who helps the hit-man get an apartment and a job in a mortuary. The job introduces Falenczyk to Laurel (Téa Leoni), with whom he begins a relationship while occasionally falling off the wagon and attending AA meetings.

"Once" (rated R for language) and "You Kill Me" (rated R for language and some violence) are showing at the Ross through Sept. 6.
