"After almost 50 years' activity as a painter, it has seemed important to relate to several subject-concepts that have been meaningful to me over that span of time," Howard said.

Two additional special events are planned. "The Artist in his 75th Year" will be shown in conjunction with "The Graphic Art of Dan Howard, 1977-2007, "at the Kiechel Fine Art Gallery, 5733 S. 34th St. in Lincoln. An artist reception for this exhibit will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14.

A discussion with Dan Howard, moderated by Department of Art and Art History chairman Ed Forde, will be held at the Kiechel Fine Art Gallery from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 20.

Howard is widely referred to as "Nebraska's leading award-winning artist." Born, raised and educated in Iowa, he received both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in art from the University of Iowa.

He taught at Arkansas State University and Kansas State University, before coming to the UNL in 1974. He served as chairman of the Department of Art and Art History from 1974 to 1983. He returned to the faculty and retired in 1996.

Following his retirement, Howard and his wife, Barbara, funded the Eisentrager•Howard Gallery in Richards Hall, along with professor emeritus of art Jim Eisentrager (who died in 2002) and his wife, Dorene. The gallery provides a space for art students to exhibit their work on a regular basis.

Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, noon to 4 p.m. The Eisentrager-Howard Gallery is located on the first floor of Richards Hall.
