Department opens semester with new name

The department formerly known as Family and Consumer Sciences is opening the academic year with a new name.
Approved by the NU Board of Regents in March, the department's new name - Child, Youth and Family Studies - is a better representation of programs offered, said Julie Johnson, chair of and professor in the department.
"The old name is the same name as a broad profession that includes disciplines like nutrition and textiles, clothing and design. Those are elements that do not represent what we offer as a department," Johnson said. "We found that people didn't know who we were and what we offered.
"This change will help eliminate that confusion."
The only direct link with the old name came through the department's Family and Consumer Science education program. The program - which Johnson said is the very smallest in the department - is still offered under the same name.
Also with the change, the department updated the name of the doctoral program, from the Family and Consumer Sciences to Children Youth and Family Studies.
The department adopted the Family and Consumer Sciences name in July 1992. The name was formed with the merger of the departments of Human Development and the Family with Consumer Science and Education.
While the change has come with some expense - new signage, letterhead, business cards, etc. - and a need to educate the campus community, Johnson said it has energized the department.
"We are all looking forward to the new year, starting things off with a new name that better identifies what we are about," Johnson said. "We are especially excited of the recruiting potential as the new name makes it easier for students interested in children or family studies to find us."
