The non-profit group, dedicated to improving campus gardens, normally donates $10,000 to $15,000 to UNL's Landscaping Services. This year, the Garden Friends' goal is $50,000.

"The all-volunteer effort to raise additional funds is seeking support from individuals, the business community and others," said Donna Ewoldt, Garden Friends board member and fundraising campaign chair. "We are reaching out for support of students, faculty and visitors to the university campuses who not only appreciate the natural beauty of mature trees, seasonal color and blooming landscapes, but use these materials for teaching horticulture students."

Recent Garden Friends contributions helped restore the Love Library Gates, the Maxwell Arboretum Vine Arbor and the Sheldon Sculpture Garden pools.

Bob Bleicher, president of the Garden Friends, said much more remains to be done. Future projects include a courtyard between Westbrook Music Building and Kimball Hall, renovation of the garden named for Pulitzer Prize-winning Nebraska author Willa Cather, and additional landscaping for Hamilton Hall and Love Library.

"Whenever we have projects that are not funded through the state system, the Garden Friends step up for us," said Eileen Bergt, director of Landscape Services.

The Garden Friends raise funds through a pre-party to the annual Spring Affair event in April. The preview offers plant purchases, dinner and a silent auction.

Plants for Spring Affair are provided by Bluebird Nursery. At 1 p.m., March 2, Harlan Hamernik, founder of the nursery, will offer a free lecture on 50 years of history of Great Plains plants. The lecture will be in the Nebraska Union (room posted).

To donate money to the Garden Friends fundraising drive, contact Ewoldt at 535-3400, Bleicher at 610-0721, or Friends treasurer Andy Kafka at 202-7379. All donations are tax deductible and can be designated toward certain projects.
